Armed Forces Service Center

Located on the Lindbergh Terminal's Skyway Level, above Door 1 of the Ticketing Lobby, the Armed Forces Service Center is an "all free" stop for active-duty military personnel, their dependents, activated reservists, or national guardsmen. The center also serves active-duty Department of Defense and PHS employees on travel orders as well as other members of the uniformed services on active duty.

A dedicated volunteer staff operates the Armed Forces Service Center around the clock, seven days a week, 365 days a year.

The center offers numerous amenities:

  • A lounge area with comfortable leather furniture, a large modern kitchen with two microwaves, and a commercial coffee machine
  • A large color television with various satellite channels
  • A donated Sprint cell phone for domestic long distance calls
  • Two computers with wireless high speed Internet access as well as a machine that prints, faxes, scans and copies
  • Assorted sandwiches, pastries, chips, cereals, soups, hot and cold beverages, and bottled water
  • Separate bunkrooms for men and women. The men's bunkroom sleeps 20, while the women's sleeps six and includes a crib and nursing chair
  • Bathroom with a changing table and various toiletry supplies
  • Children's toys, games, playing cards and two small TV/radios
  • Paperback books, stationery, stamps, sewing kits, iron and ironing board
  • Supervised storage of luggage, and bunk wake-up service

The Armed Forces Service Center is unique to Minnesota. It is not affiliated with the USO or with the Metropolitan Airports Commission, which owns and operates Minneapolis-St. Paul International Airport. Rather, the one-of a-kind facility was founded by Maggie Purdum in 1970, after her son died in Vietnam. A non-profit organization, the center relies for funding on various veterans organizations and their auxiliaries, private businesses, and individuals.
