K-9 Programs

The Airport Police Department has three narcotics K-9 teams. They have won many awards and trophies, including 1st, 2nd and 3rd place in the nation.

In 2002, the TSA began funding explosive ordnance detection (EOD) K-9 teams at MSP. The teams undergo 10 weeks of intense training. This is followed by a month of acclimation to the airport environment, two months of retraining with odors and further training before their certification testing. The department now has six EOD K-9 teams protecting travelers and employees at MSP.

All of the dogs are eager to please their handlers and are rewarded with play toys for their hard work. They live with their handlers and develop a special bond.
