During the COVID-19 pandemic, the GREATER MSP Partnership is tracking key metrics to see how the pandemic is impacting the economy and the subsequent recovery.
One metric that is of interest is the return to office of workers in the region’s downtowns, which helps gauge vibrancy and a return to normalcy. The workforce in downtown Minneapolis is currently reanimated to approximately 35.9 percent working in downtown offices as of August 2021. As COVID-19 vaccinations have become more widespread, the return to office ramped up in the spring and summer of 2021.
However, as the Delta variant caused cases to increase, many companies have delayed employees' return to the office. COVID-19 case volumes need to continue to decrease, and stabilize, prior to a full return by workers.
The Minneapolis Downtown Council and its partners began collecting return-tooffice data in August 2020, when the share of employees working in-office in the core business district of downtown Minneapolis was estimated at 12.2 percent.
The return-to-office rate remained roughly 15-16 percent through the fall of 2020 and early months of 2021. In April, the share jumped significantly to 23.3 percent -- the largest monthly increase and the largest share of in-office workers seen since the data was first collected. That figure continued to increase significantly throughout the late spring and early summer, to 35.9 percent in August.
As the prevalence of the Delta variant has increased, many employers have delayed return-to-work plans to account for increasing cases and to monitor conditions. The share of workers returning is based on the total number of employees coming into the office prior to the COVID19 pandemic.
The Minneapolis Downtown Council is the business association helping downtown Minneapolis businesses, community leaders and citizens build on downtown assets and implement future goals. The Council currently has over 450 member organizations ranging from Fortune 500s to start-up companies both downtown and throughout the Twin Cities. They collaborate with public, private and non-profit organizations to create a vibrant atmosphere in the city of Minneapolis’ core, advocate for initiatives that promote growth and stability, and forge a strong, inclusive 21st century city.
