America Recycles Day is coming up on Saturday Nov. 15, and Minneapolis-St. Paul International Airport (MSP) has tips on utilizing sustainable practices as you move through the terminals. Consider the tips below to reduce waste at the airport.
Plentiful opportunities to recycle and sort your waste
MSP flyers will find recycling bins in all public areas, and we use easy-to-understand, standardized labels to avoid confusion. MSP also provides liquid diversion bins before security and at food courts to better manage liquid waste. Look for an Oscar AI sorting unit, located conveniently throughout the terminals, to help you sort your waste in a fun, interactive way. Find out more about our various recycling programs.
Bring your own bottle or cup and fill up post-security
MSP’s water bottle refill stations are located conveniently throughout the terminals. To reduce plastic use, bring an empty bottle through security and find a refill station by asking a volunteer or by clicking on MSP’s interactive map and search ‘water refill station.’ In 2024, MSP refill stations were used 27% more than in 2023. The stations were used 8.5 million times, reducing an estimated 755 pounds of single-use plastics every day.
Our vending machines work to reduce waste
When dining before a flight, we provide strategies to eliminate single-use packaging. Consider a meal from Farmer’s Fridge refrigerated vending machines, located at both terminals and serviced regularly to provide fresh and healthy food options. The machines also allow customers to deposit their BPA-free containers after use.
Go digital to trim paper use
Using electronic travel documents in your airline's mobile app helps avoid paper waste. Also, if you plan to park at MSP, make a reservation online to eliminate printed receipts. The reservation system gives you a QR code to store in your phone. If you do happen to generate paper waste during your travels, please recycle it.
